Ice dams are one of those roof problems homeowners often discover after water has already made its way inside. The best time to deal with them is before snow covers the roof.

What Causes an Ice Dam?

Heat escaping into the attic can warm parts of the roof and melt the snow above them. That water runs toward the colder edge of the roof and freezes again.

As the ice builds up, more melting snow gets trapped behind it. The water can then work beneath the shingles and enter the roof.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Common signs of an ice dam problem include:

• A thick ridge of ice along the roof’s edge
• Large icicles repeatedly forming in the same areas
• Water stains near exterior walls or ceilings
• Damp insulation or moisture inside the attic
• Gutters beginning to sag or pull away

These signs do not automatically mean the roof needs to be replaced. They do mean the roof and attic should be checked.

What You Can Do Before Winter

Start by looking for missing, cracked or curling shingles from the ground. Check the areas around chimneys, vents and roof edges for visible damage.

Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts so water has a clear path away from the roof. Clean gutters cannot correct heat loss from the home, but blocked drainage can make winter roof problems worse.

Recurring ice dams may also point to attic air leaks, poor insulation or ventilation problems. Those issues should be inspected before temperatures drop.

If an Ice Dam Has Already Formed

Avoid climbing onto an icy roof or chipping at the ice with a shovel, axe or other sharp tool. This can damage shingles and flashing while creating a serious fall risk.
